Ten ponds for Sundarbans
Fabulous result of the anniversary campaign of Zonta.

On the occasion of his fifty years existence, the Club Zonta of Schaffhausen organized in the year 2009 a big collection in favor of the Region Sundarbans in India. In this densely populated area,
for natural reasons, the water of the surface is loaded of arsen and not drinkable.

During a little celebration, Vreni Knöpfel, our Pastpresident of Zonta Club Schaffhausen, handed over symbolical a cheque of swiss Francs 40’000.- to the manager of the Georg Fischer Foundation “Clean Water”, Dr. Roland Gröbli, for the construction of the ponds in the Sundarbans.

Healthy water can only be win from very deep ground. Still now many villages don’t have deep ponds. That’s why women and children have to walk each day many kilometers, to get water for her families. The Club Zonta of Schaffhausen had the goal, to spend for five villages one pond, for each decade of his existence one. Now this goal was exceeded very much, as a pleasure of all of us.

The campaign started at the end of March 2009 on the occasion of the international Day of Water with a stand on the Fronwagplatz in Schaffhausen. The Club Zonta of Schaffhausen sold clean Schaffhauser drinking water. The sale was very successful. At the birthday party last May the Club received many donations from other friendly Clubs of Zonta, as well as from other Schaffhauser Service Clubs. Our till could be filled up thanks to different contributions of companies of Schaffhausen as well of the proceeds of the Christmas concert of the Compagnia Rossini in Stein am Rhein. At the end of the campaign we counted the proud amount of 40’000 swiss francs.

This money will be send now to our partnership organization in the Sundarbans – the Foundation Mass Education - , who will give order to build the ponds and they will observe it. The Group Georg Fischer of Schaffhausen made already good experience with the water projects, so that we can be sure, that our money will be used 100 % to the right destination. Once again, many thanks for everybody, who supported us.

In Memory of Elke Johler-Duriez
Governor 2004-2006

After a short but violent illness borne with great courage , Elke Johler-Duriez died on August 2, 2008 in Bad Homburg.

Apart from being intensely engaged in fund-raising for the service project of her home club, Bad Homburg,  Elke was a thouroughly authentic international Zontian. In her Biennium as Governor, Elke brought a lot of movement into District 28. She pushed us to take new challenges. She motivated Zontians for new tasks, and gave assistance in realizing them. She was interested in the women in the different countries of our district. She did not shy the trouble of learning Italian because she wanted to be able to communicate with Italian Zontians. In the last two years, Elke acted as District Parliamentarian. She would have liked to go on with service for Zonta and present herself as a candidate for the position of International Director. Her serious illness, however, forced her to desist.

Area 02

Elke did a lot to further the Young Women in Public Affairs Award which she thought to be of prime importance. "Try to interest young women in equal rights, in environmental concerns, in sustainability – they are our future!" This is the message she gives us on our way.

We will miss Elke very much.
She was a devoted Zontian and to all who knew her closer also a good friend. Many things she initiated will keep on reminding us of her.
